Why a series of animated objects based on old cinematic devices?

While I love and embrace the digital age there seems to be something less romantic about gazing at a phone, or a computer screen to see videos and films. On youtube alone, billions of hours of video are created and consumed each year. Wouldn’t it be nice to create something analog from those videos, a sculpture that you can physically interact with?

That's where my series of animated objects comes in. They are based on early cinematic devices, but with a twist.

I'm using high tech to make low tech, I use :

lasers cutters, 3D printers, natural woods Synthetic substrates

and bring them together to reinvent and modernize the Mutoscope, the Zoëtrope, the Flipbook, the Phenakistoscopes and more

and my thisway/thatway use a centuries old technique where two images change and combine depending on the angle with which they are viewed.

(I use high-tech tools like lasers and 3D printers to help create my art),

Persistence of vision
is not just a toy

Persistence of vision refers to the optical illusion that occurs when visual perception of an object does not cease for some time after the rays of light proceeding from it have ceased to enter the eye.[2] The illusion has also been described as "retinal persistence",[3] "persistence of impressions" or simply "persistence" and other variations.

This has been believed to be the explanation for motion perception in cinema and animated films, but this theory has long been discarded by scientists.

Introducing a series of animated devices based old cinematic devices

ce, your babies first steps,  grandma blowing a kiss, the winning shot, an amazing swing, a kick, a dive, a punch, a score, a goooooaaaaaaaaaalllllll.  create an award for the best stunt, a darwin award, even an MTV

"i have not failed 10,000 times.  i have successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work."

With the precise placement of hundreds of blades (frames) a lot of my work is repetitive so I do a lot of tests and create a lot of jigs to help me. These are just some of the tests and jigs I've made to create my work.
